Banana Fibre Naturally Dyed + Hand Woven
Jaffna, Sri Lanka
Working with a banana farmer cooperative where bio-waste banana fibre is extracted from the stems of the banana plant, and sustainably hand woven by a group of artisan women into a range of products, where otherwise it would be disposed on and burnt. A single banana plant produces waste that accounts for up to 80% of its total plant mass, only producing fruit once before being cut down. Recycling this bio-waste instead of burning reduces CO2 emissions. The resulting fibres are naturally dyed using local waste resources such as coconut husk, onion skin and ayurvedic herbs and hand woven into textiles that are biodegradable and non-toxic.
